The Surf Coast Shire formally adopted the Alcohol and other Drug Strategy in June 2003.

Prior to this, in 2001, funds were allocated by the Victorian Department of Human Services to facilitate the development of Local Drug Strategy Plans for each Local Government area. A reference group was formed and researched conducted on behalf of the Surf Coast Shire. A detailed report was produced outlining a number of objectives. These have been condensed into five recommedations which make up the plan.

The aims of the project were to:

  • provide an overview of existing demographics in the region
  • undertake the mapping of drug services available with the Surf Coast Shire
  • develop a profile of service users including age, gender, type of service and presenting, substance misused from de-identified data from service providers
  • interview (using a structured format) both service providers and key informants to identify salient issues related to drug and alcohol use and misuse
  • identify level of use of services and document any major seasonal trends
  • make recommendations to enhance policy, procedures and the treatment and management of drug and alcohol problems in the Surf Coast Shire region
