New Waste Collection Days - Starting on MONDAY 29 JUNE 2009
Changes to Surf Coast Shire Urban Waste Collection Days
Surf Coast Shire Council is changing the days on which urban kerbside garbage, recycle and green waste is collected to improve the service.
Collection days in urban areas will be performed in a progressive geographic sequence during each weekly cycle. Collections will begin at the western end of the Shire (Lorne) on Mondays and end at the eastern end (Torquay Nth) on Fridays.
Ratepayers were sent an information flyer in February 2009, outlining the collection changes. Just recently we sent ratepayers their new 2009/2010 waste collection calendar (with their rate notices).
If you have not received your 2009/2010 waste collection calendar or are unsure about which day your collection is please contact our Customer Service staff on 5261 0600.
NOTE: residents receiving a rural collection service will remain unchanged.

Why the Change?
The current system has operated since before 1995, when there were three different collection contractors. Now there is only one contractor, and the Shire’s population has grown.
The old system has become unwieldy and doesn’t make best use of the contractor’s time or equipment. In peak times, it is difficult to provide a reliable service.
The new collection schedule will have:
- Defined and easy to understand boundaries for each collection area.
- A simpler schedule of collection days.
- A more even number of properties serviced on each collection day, enabling a more reliable service at peak times.
- Better use of collection trucks, as all trucks are servicing one area at the same time.

KERBSIDE RECYCLING SERVICE (fortnightly collection - put your recylables out on the same day as your general garbage.)
