New Dog Controls
Dogs to be on a Leash in Public Areas in the Townships
After an extensive review and public consultation, process, Council has adopted new dog control regulations that aim to achieve a balance between differing and often passionately held community views about dog control.
The new regulations provide clarity by specifying that, within the township areas of the Surf Coast Shire, all dogs are required to be on a leash in all public places, except as specified in nominated areas.
The new regulations came into force on 17 December 2007.
Information being used to help explain the changes includes new signage on beaches and in other public areas, to indicate the respective dog controls applying in that area; printed leaflets and maps explaining the changes; and public education by local laws officers.
Council recognises that these changes will need to be reviewed to ensure that any adjustments that become evident as a result of their implementation can be made. The current Council has decided to review the new controls before council elections are held in December next year.
