Environment

The Surf Coast Shire contains rich and diverse environmental values, including coastal, estuarine, intertidal and marine environments, streams, wetlands, significant heathlands, grassy woodlands and bushland areas and habitat for many threatened species. Loss of habitat, salinity, erosion, soil depletion, spread of weeds and pathogens, and pest animals, continue to put pressure on natural ecosystems and environments. As a custodian, and the responsible authority under the Planning and Environment Act, Council plays a major role in the protection and management of natural, cultural and heritage values in the region.
Sustainability at Home and Beyond
SAHAB is a project running in the Surf Coast Shire from late 2007 to mid 2009. The project focuses on positive responses to local and global sustainability issues. To find out more, visit the SAHAB website www.sahab.com.au (external link). |

Environmental Management Strategy, 2006
In 2006 the Surf Coast Shire published the Environmental Management Strategy, 2006 (EMS) which adopts a holistic approach to environmental management. It is a broad ranging document affecting all business units within Council, the wider
community and other local authorities that have management responsibilities within the Shire. There is also clear intention by Council to ensure all Council decisions and activities are not done in isolation, but consider regional, statewide and national priorities, while always working in partnership at the local level to address local issues.
The guiding principle of this Strategy is to protect, manage and enhance the local environment while making a contribution to regional, state and national environmental objectives. |
