Animal and Livestock Control

Council animal control responsibilities include domestic pets and live stock.

Responsible pet ownership is encouraged and registration and microchipping of dogs and cats is requirement under State legislation.

Owners must ensure that all animals are secured to the property and that fencing is in good order.

The owner or occupier of any land where any animal is kept, other than a dog or a cat, must ensure the type of animal being kept on the land does not trespass on any Council land or a road.

Council Authorised Officers will respond to calls in relation to the removal of stray and unauthorised live stock from Council roadways and property.

The following links outline the provisions for regulation of the keeping of animals, birds, reptiles and bees within residential zones, a rural living zone or a built up area. They regulate the number and type of animals which can be kept, and the conditions in which they are kept.

These regulations do not apply to any land:
(a)     on which a pet shop is located; or
(b)     on which an animalhospital or veterinary practice is located.

In Farming Zones animal keeping (other than Animal boarding) must be not more than 5 animals.  Other provisions apply for cattle feedlots, broiler farms, host farms, etc.  For further information, please refer to the Surf Coast Shire Planning Scheme (Farm Zones).
