High Tide – Full of Highlights!
A spectacular circus and aqua show at Cosy Corner, great local musicians including headline act Tiffany Eckhardt and Friends, billy cart races and local theatre troupes are all among the fun for this year’s High Tide festival, which promises to be the best yet.

The Festival will be held over 4-6 December in Torquay, with each day offering visitors the opportunity to participate in a variety of events.

Opening night starts at 8pm on Friday 4 December with a fantastic display of song and movement at the mouth of Spring Creek which will celebrate the festival’s 2009 theme - ‘Natural Balance’.

The performance will signify the balance between the cycle of nature and the choices we make living here.

Saturday guarantees more amazing events over a variety of venues throughout Torquay.  In addition to the two original stages, an additional stage in Gilbert Street and a Garage Band Stage will be introduced, celebrating and showcasing local talent and building on central Torquay’s great atmosphere.

The High Tide Festival is one of the Surf Coast’s biggest community events and a great way to celebrate the creativity, respect for our environment and spirit that defines our community.  To find out more, visit www.hightidefestival.com.au

New Bus Trial
Developing affordable and practical public transport has always been a big issue on the Surf Coast.  From late December, a new transport trial will begin that will link Moriac with Torquay, Jan Juc, Bellbrae and Waurn Ponds.

It’s a great way for people to run errands, visit friends, go to events or travel to important destinations like the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre and the beach during the warm summer months.

This welcome initiative is funded through the Victorian Government’s Transport Connections Program.  The trial will run on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday between 19 December 2009 and 11 April 2010.

Great Victorian Bike Ride
Road closures will occur on the Great Ocean Road on Friday 4 December as the Great Victorian Bike Ride wends its way through the Surf Coast.

The Great Ocean Road will be closed to all traffic between Skenes Creek and the intersection with Hird Street in Lorne between 6:30am and midday; and the road will be closed to east-bound traffic only between its intersection with Hall Street in Lorne and O’Donohue Road in Anglesea between 10am and 3:30pm.
We are proposing to close the Great Ocean Road to all traffic from the intersection of Skenes Creek Road in Skenes Creek to the Intersection of Hird Street in Lorne.  The time proposed for the closure is 6:30am to 12:00 noon.

Young Musos Bring Home Gongs
This year’s Kool Skools awards once again showed the great talent of our young musicians in the Surf Coast, with local entrants picking up five nominations and an award.

Melody Moon won a Special Judge’s Award – Singer/Songwriter and was also nominated for Best Acoustic Track Featuring a Female Vocal.

Sachi Petrohilos Misty Grass was nominated in the Best Ballad category, Rhys Bongetti was nominated for Best Acoustic Track Featuring a Male Vocal, while Hole in the Shoe was a nominee for Best Thrash Track.

All can be heard on the Surf Coast Kool Skools compilation for 2009, to be launched soon.

Council’s Youth Development unit  co-ordinates our involvement in Kool Skools, which brings great opportunities for exposure and the chance to work with music industry professionals to local young people.

Congratulations to all – I’m sure we will see much more of these names in the future!

Lorne-Aireys P-12 Sculpture Walk Opening
On Thursday 3 December I’ll be privileged to celebrate a great milestone for the Lorne-Aireys P-12 school community with the opening of a sculpture walk at the Aireys campus.

The walk is to be part of a reserve the school established as a way of sharing and celebrating the biodiversity of our region with students.  Grade 6 students have worked throughout the year with local naturists Geoff Clarke and Margaret McDonald to research 13 of the area’s plant species, before working with local artists Jiri Novak and Dot Leslie to produce sculptures reflecting their species.

Grade 4-5 students have also produced sculptures reflecting on the animals in the area.  Local mosaic artist Avys Hope will also be producing a piece to mark the reserve’s entrance.

The occasion will mark a great initiative between school and community that will pass on the creativity that now defines Aireys Inlet to the next generation.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any issues, ideas or concerns:

Kind Regards

Libby
