Surf Coast Walk

Project Summary - The original Surf Coast Walk (SCW) from Jan Juc to Moggs Creek was developed in 1987. The walk route passes through a range of coastal, bushland and urban environments. Since the walk was first promoted it has unfortunately become poorly defined in sections and is in poor condition in others. Promotional material on the walk is also very limited.

A Surf Coast Walk Working Group (comprising the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee, Surf Coast Shire, Surf Coast Tourism, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Parks Victoria, Alcoa and ANGAIR) came together in 2006 with the shared commitment to a progressive upgrade and redevelopment of the Surf Coast Walk and to provide a co-ordinated approach to achieving a continuous coastal trail through the length of the municipality. The Working Group established a vision that the SCW may become "one of Victoria's and Australia's iconic walking trails" and in doing so appointed a consultant, Insight Leisure Planning, to prepare a feasibility study which investigated a redeveloped walk.

A re-alignment of the original walk route to bring it closer to the coast, extending the walk north east to Breamlea and south east to Cumberland River and upgrading current walk sections were key areas addressed in the Feasibility Study. In addition to this, the study identified marketing opportunities for the new walk, benefits and impacts of the new walk, costs associated with the new walk and priorities for development.
