Tourism Signage

Tourism operators and attractions whose core business is tourism are eligible to apply for tourism and services signage. Signage approvals are based on the "Tourism Signage Guidelines" developed by Tourism Victoria and VicRoads in cooperation with local Councils.

The primary objective of these guidelines is to facilitate an efficient and effective tourist and services information system throughout the State, which meets the requirements of the travelling public, the tourism industry and government. The objective includes:

• a high standard of direction signing, including support to a network of accredited visitor information centres;
• co-ordinated and complementary tourist and services signs; and
• widely available, highly relevant marketing material.

In addressing this objective, the guidelines aim to:

• emphasise that tourist signing is directional, not promotional (ie. not for advertising purposes);
• recognise the State’s tourism strategies (including those generated by Tourism Victoria’s product regions) as principal points of reference in developing and enhancing signing schemes;
• ensure ease of visitor navigation by using the most effective combination of tourist and services signs, direction signs, marketing/promotional material and accredited visitor information centres;
• adopt technical standards which not only facilitate motorist recognition and comprehension but meet road safety objectives and requirements;
• reduce roadside clutter and visual pollution created by uncontrolled and inappropriate signs; and
• provide consistent application and administration across the State.

Tourism operators who are members of tourism may apply for a sign as part of a total wayfinding system to assist visitors in finding their business. The application must meet the requirements of the Signage Policy and each application will be assessed on an individual basis
