Impounded Cars

After a vehicle has been impounded, the last registered owner of the vehicle will be notified of the impoundment.

Upon proof of identification and payment of any applicable fees, ie: towing and storage fees, the owner may claim such vehicle.

If the vehicle is not claimed within 14 days, or if the vehicle is unidentifiable (eg: no registration plates, engine number etc) Council may dispose of it under its authority as prescribed under the Local Government Act 1989.

Abandoned Cars

Under Council’s Roads and Streets Local Law, it is an offence to leave an unregistered vehicle in a public place without a permit from Council. A $300 penalty applies to this offence, or up to $1,000 if court action is required.

If you suspect that a vehicle may have been abandoned, please notify Council with the relevant details, ie: location of the vehicle, colour, make, model, registration number (if any), then Council’s Authorised Officers will make enquiries regarding the vehicle.

Council will first check with the Police to see if the vehicle has been stolen.

If the vehicle is unregistered, Council will place a Notice to Comply on the vehicle requiring that the vehicle be removed, usually within 24 hours. If the vehicle is not removed by the nominated time, Council will remove the vehicle and relocate it to its impounding yard. The last registered owner of the vehicle will be notified of the vehicle’s impoundment.

If the vehicle is not claimed within 14 days, Council may dispose of it as prescribed under the Local Government Act 1989.

If a vehicle is legally parked, is registered and is not causing an obstruction, Council will contact the Police to ascertain from the owner when the vehicle is likely to be removed.
