Road maintenance

Grader on road

Each road, no matter how carefully designed and constructed, will deteriorate as a result of traffic, weather and time. Maintenance methods and levels vary according to the road classification and whether the road is sealed or unsealed.

Council has a Road Management Plan(PDF, 3MB) and carries out road maintenance to keep the roads in our shire in good condition. A few of the programs in the management plan are listed below.

Roadside Slashing Program

As a fire prevention measure, Council conducts an annual rural roadside slashing program(PDF, 133KB) at the end of spring and beginning of the summer. There may be follow up slashing mid way through the summer as well.

Road Renewal

We work to keep our roads as close as possible to their original condition. For gravel roads this is generally re-sheeting the road with new gravel, and for sealed roads may involve resealing the road surface or reconstructing the road if there is pavement failure. The program does not include any upgrade to the road eg sealing a gravel road or widening a narrow seal road. View Council's Road Renewal Program.(PDF, 50KB)

Dust suppression

During the summer period some residents are affected by dust generated by traffic travelling along gravel roads and streets.

To help reduce this nuisance, Council provides assistance to those most severely affected by arranging for the application of a dust suppressant to unsealed roads near homes.

The annual program is undertaken in late December to optimise the effectiveness of the dust nuisance over the summer period. The cost of last year’s program included 35 sites across the municipality and averaged $3,000/km. It is anticipated that this year’s $75,000 budget allocation will support dust suppression on about 25 kilometres of Council’s 500 km long unsealed road network.

In addition to works funded by Council, there are several roads that are treated through a “private works” agreement.

How to apply for your road to be considered for the dust suppression program

If you'd like to have a road considered for this year's program email us at info@surfcoast.vic.gov.au. Please include the name and section of the road you wish to have considered and any other information you may think is useful.

In November, Council will assess all requests received, taking into consideration the volume, type and speed of passing traffic, and proximity and number of homes close to the road before finalising the dust suppression program for 2018-19

All residents who have made an application will be advised whether their request has been successful.

If you want to talk to us about your application or want to talk to an officer before making a submission, please contact Customer Service on 5261 0600.
