Buy local and seasonal food

Eating locally produced food means getting food that's grown in sync with the seasons, is fresher, requires less energy to produce and transport, and supports local producers. It alleviates the reliance on long-distance transport and refrigeration of foods that are grown thousands of kilometres away.

Farmers markets are a great place to buy locally produced food and a directory is available from the Australian Farmers' Markets Association or the Melbourne Community Farmers' Markets.

Grow your own food

The best way to eat local and seasonal food is to use your own backyard! You can have a veggie garden all year round with seasonal vegetables. Even if you just have a balcony or small courtyard to work with, you could try container gardening (check out Gardening Australia’s Pots and Small Gardens Factsheets).

Avoid eating endangered fish

Some fish are being harvested to the brink of extinction.Make sure you're selecting fish that are sustainable to reduce your impact our estuaries, bays, oceans, pond systems and wetlands

Recycle your food waste

Start composting or worm farming to keep your organic waste out of the landfill. It's fun for the family and simple to do once you get the hang of it.
