Community and natural values central to Winchelsea Common plan

Nationally significant vegetation is being protected and celebrated through the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the Surf Coast Shire (SCS) Council’s draft Future Use Plan for the Winchelsea Common.

The draft plan includes interpretive walks, picnic areas, wildlife observation points and a shared path to give access through the Common’s nationally significant Grassy Eucalypt Woodland. It also includes the possibility of a raised boardwalk through the more sensitive areas to protect the local flora and fauna.

The Common, formerly the site of the gun club and go-kart club, has been closed due to high levels of contaminants present in the form of lead shot, clay target fragment and plastic casings.

DELWP is coordinating remediation of the Common, with work to start soon on removing contaminated material including tyres from the site. DELWP is working towards reopening the Common safely to the public as soon as possible.

For more information about the draft Future Use Plan, upcoming engagement events or to join the project mailing list, visit or phone Sally Patterson at DELWP on 03 5220 2008.
