Fire Up! at Winchelsea Makers & Growers Market

1 December 2017

People can collect a free copy of the award-winning board game The Fire Game at the upcoming Winchelsea Makers & Growers Market.

Residents and visitors will be able to access fire ready information at the Fire Up! information stall at the twilight festival market in Winchelsea on Friday 8 December from 5pm to 9pm.

Winchelsea Ward Councillors Heather Wellington and Carol McGregor encouraged people who were attending the market at the Bluestone Bridge to look out for the Fire Up! information.

“With the Surf Coast one of the world’s most bushfire-prone areas, it’s crucial that people understand their fire risk and get prepared now, not when a fire starts,” Cr Wellington said.

“Our officers will be on-hand to pass on simple planning and preparation tips.”

People at the market can pick-up their own copy of The Fire Game – an educational and interactive board game that results in improved fire awareness. Inspired by local towns, players can put themselves in situations that simulate some of the real challenges of a bushfire.

“The innovative board game starts important conversations about what people will or should do in the event of a bushfire,” Cr McGregor said.

“The game supports people to plan ahead, adapt and make fast decisions under pressure, in the event of a bushfire affecting their area.”

Fire Up! information will also be available at Council office in Torquay as part of the Torquay Farmers Market on Saturday 9 December.
