Cultural & Heritage Places
The Surf Coast Shire is renowned for its significant natural and cultural places including national estate heathlands and Otway National Park, the Great Ocean Road and the Barwon River, Aireys Inlet Lighthouse and Lorne Pier, historic bluestone buildings and structures, and spectacular beaches and coastline. These places need to be formally recognised and protected.
It is important also that places, which contribute in a more subtle way towards the Shire’s natural and cultural heritage, are recognised. Places such as rural landscapes, roadsides and views, old trees and patches of remnant vegetation, indigenous flora and fauna, local monuments and buildings, all combine to create a sense of what the Surf Coast Shire is.
