9 November 2017

Councillor David Bell has been elected Mayor of Surf Coast Shire Council.

Councillors voted on the Mayor and Deputy Mayor roles at a Special Council Meeting on Wednesday night, with Cr Bell elected as Mayor. He will be supported by Cr Clive Goldsworthy as Deputy Mayor.

It marks the first time Cr Bell – a Torquay Ward councillor – has held the Mayoral role.

“It’s a humbling experience to accept the position of Mayor,” he said.

“I thank my fellow councillors for this privilege.”

Cr Bell, partner Traci and their two sons moved to the Surf Coast in 2002. They run a small organic farm in Bellbrae and Cr Bell manages the Torquay Farmers Market.

A Director of the Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Group and a member of the Renewable Energy Taskforce, Cr Bell will guide the Council as it aims to fulfill its purpose to help the community and environment to thrive.

“Our councillors will work together to advance the residents of the Surf Coast Shire,” he said.

Lorne Ward Cr Goldsworthy said he was looking forward to fulfilling the role of Deputy Mayor.

Outgoing Mayor Cr Brian McKiterick and Deputy Mayor Cr Carol McGregor were acknowledged by Chief Executive Officer Keith Baillie for their commitment over the past 12 months.
