Heal Country - Take Two!

How great it felt to be able to drive to Anglesea Art Space on Monday to re-hang Council's NAIDOC Exhibition: Heal Country with Coordinator Helen Gibbins and Local Area Coordinator Michelle Conn.

Whilst we are very sad not to have been able to have an official opening with the artists involved, we are so grateful to each of them for allowing us to hold the work until now so that we could lead the new exhibition program with this show.

Do make sure that you take a look: each of the works in the show speaks of the strength of traditional knowledge systems and the vitality of contemporary culture in the present; and for anyone who finds they have saved money due to not being able to go on holiday, there are some beautiful and poignant works for sale - as well as some lovely weavings to brighten yours' or someone else's day - and all proceeds go back to the artists.

Art, Place, People

Eighteen months into the pandemic and the impacts of COVID-19 have really begun to hurt. Many are struggling with high levels of stress and anxiety and our capacity to cope with things that would normally not cause a ripple has been significantly lessened.

At a personal level I find myself longing for live music, literary festivals and bustling exhibitions; for openings and conversations and discourse - not endless emails and meetings and changes of plans, COVID-checklists and cancellations...

That's why it is so great to hear from artists across the Shire about the fabulous projects they have in the pipeline, many of which are being achieved with Council's proud support.

From the glorious Bike Stations by Jeff Raglus currently being installed in Torquay to the amazing list of recipients of Council's Creative Communities COVID Relief Funding grants - including:
  • $20,000 to Lorne's Meaghan Shelton for the development of a sustainable Artist-In-Residence program at Lorne Community Connect.
  • $20,000 to Ferne Millen Photography for the further development and exhibition of the project Journey on Wadawurrung Country with Wadawurrung Corporation
  • $20,000 to Martinich & Carran for a large-scale exhibition of works by a curated selection of Surf Coast artists at the Affordable Art Fair in March 2022.
to the preparations in place for Deb Elliot's mural on the side wall of Stabbs Butchery in Anglesea, the finalisation of the Yellow Gums Stage at Bob Pettitt Reserve and the Deans Marsh Festival Stand, to the upcoming realisation of multiple Arts Development Seed Projects, Council's support for this range of projects (plus those others we haven't yet mentioned) demonstrates clearly the breadth of work that is going on across our region and the excitement of what is soon to come - despite the seeming loss of so much.

This is something we will get a sneak peak at next week as we begin the process of collating the 2022 Surf Coast Arts Calendar entries.

If you haven't yet registered you have until this Friday 17 September at 5PM.

More details below.

VISUAL ARTS

With the doors of Anglesea Art Space closed for the last month due to the restrictions that were in place, Council have been busy behind the scenes having a new floor installed and the walls and exhibition furniture painted so that Anglesea Art Space could leap back into life once restrictions lifted.

Our Coordinator Helen is currently reading through the EOI's received for the 2021-2 exhibition calendar and will begin to get back to artists over the next few weeks.

Please be advised that we will try to work with your proposed dates as best as we can, however ongoing restrictions due to COVID do sometimes force delays and closures that cannot be avoided.

What a fabulous response we have had to our Paste Up series of artist portraits!

Special thanks go to SCAS Inc. Secretary (and artist!) Fay Valcanis for the great job she did liaising with local businesses to showcase our arts sector in such a wonderful array of sites.

The first installations focused on just some of the visual artists in our community, with a second series of some of our Performing Artists still to come.

In the meantime, however - and as is the nature of ephemeral art works - the visual artist Paste Ups will start to be decommissioned next week.

If you haven't yet had a chance to see them - or if you're one of the artists whose portrait is featured and you want to document your part in the project - please make sure that you get out and about this weekend, as the works will disappear over the next few weeks...

Surf Coast Art Space @ The MAC

The Local Art Pop Up event at SCAS Gallery at The MAC was closed early due to the last COVID-19 lockdown, however it has now re-opened.

This is the first official public event for the artist-led SCAS Inc at The MAC.  It is, hopefully, the first of a series of Pop Ups in the lead up to the fit out of the gallery.

Once the fit out is complete there will be an annual program of exhibitions as well as a local art shop, both open to the public four or five days each week.

Keep an eye out on the Surf Coast Art Space socials for the imminent announcement of the Expression of Interest to exhibit at the SCAS gallery @ The MAC, and to enquire about becoming a regular shop supplier.

Lorne Sculpture Biennale - Spirit of Place Conversations: Art, Nature, Ritual

In the lead-up to Lorne Sculpture Biennale (postponed until March 2022), Lorne Sculpture will host the first of their Spirit of Place Conversations - Art, Nature, Ritual - on Sunday 17 October at 2PM at the glorious QDOS

Pattie Beerens and Simon Buttonshaw have recently been involved in separate art projects that seek to offer audiences a deeper understanding of the natural world and our place within it by inviting conscious physical engagement with the artwork.

Facilitated by Harriet Gaffney, the artists will discuss working in public space and the role of ritual in evoking a unique sense of place that generates meaning with audiences and highlighting the unseen.

Introduced by Lorne Sculpture Biennale Artistic Director, Graeme Wilkie will give a brief overview of his vision for this year's Biennale theme Spirit of Place.

Ticket price includes refreshments.

IN-PERSON: Janet Brown - Playwriting

Writers' Workshop presented by Geelong Regional Libraries

Saturday, September 25
10:30am - 3:30pm

Geelong Library and Heritage Centre (The Dome)

The High Ground

Join us for an in-person workshop to learn the ins and outs of play writing with local author and play-write, Janet Brown.

Playwriting: from the Concept to the Stage
In this one day workshop, you will be introduced to strategies and ideas with Janet Brown to help you move forward in your script writing project. What is the story you want to tell? Beginning with how to harness your ideas and developing a creative concept, then moving on to shaping your story with an understanding of character, dialogue and structure, you will explore the art of playwriting and different styles of working. Playwriting is an art and to get your play on stage it becomes a great collaborative  adventure! What do you do with your script when you think it is finished? Writing the play is the first major step, but there is much more to understand about the journey from the page to the stage.  Janet will share her industry knowledge and experience with you.  Suitable for beginners and those with playwriting experience.

Janet Brown’s short stories, plays and short film have won prizes in Australia, the UK and Canada. Her work is widely published. She has been writing for theatre for twenty years, and several of her plays have been staged by various companies in Melbourne, Sydney and toured regional Victoria. She has six plays published with APT (formerly Australian Plays).  In 2020 her successful play ‘The Hope Song’ was transformed into a digital film by director Socratis Otto with a cast of Australia’s top actors. She has a Master of Arts in Creative Writing. With decades of extensive experience as a writing teacher and mentor, Janet guides others to discover and develop their own voices as writers.

DYSON COMMUNITY GRANTS – NEW ROUND

The Dyson Group of Companies, incorporating the legendary Cobb & Co brand, is pleased to announce the launch of the next round of the Dysons Community Grants.

This program has been established to provide grants in support of the many community groups and organisations around Victoria.

Program Manager, Grant Deacon, said the program aims to help support community groups at grass roots level.

“We live in challenging times and these grants aim to assist community-based groups.  There were fourteen grants given in the previous round, all great community-based projects. The number of applications demonstrates how much need there is in the community and we will continue to help where we can.”

There are two rounds of grants annually, each with $10,000 available (maximum grant $1000). Eligible organisations include schools, sporting clubs, not-for-profit groups, charities, local societies and emergency services.

Grant said, “Dysons is happy to be able to give back to the community. Last round saw grants go to sporting clubs, primary and secondary schools, scouts and local society groups. We hope our grants help these organisations support their communities and look forward to helping further with this next round.”

This next round of grants opens on 13 September and closes 11 October 2021.

All details, including an online application form, can be found at http://dysongroup.com.au/about/community-grants

Calling all Surf Coast Artists!

Council is inviting Surf Coast Shire artists to put their business on the map!

Inspired by Surf Coast is a ‘buy local’ campaign designed to promote and celebrate the talent, innovation and collaborative spirit of the Surf Coast. It was created in September 2020 to connect local businesses to local and nearby residents. We are inviting you to take part in this great opportunity to connect with customers, helping to increase online and in person sales.

Sounds good you say, tell me more!

‘Inspired by Surf Coast’ as the name suggests is inspired by the quality, innovation and variety of products and services available from local Surf Coast businesses.  Council’s Business Support team created a place where customers can quickly discover new unique gift ideas, shopping, food and drinks, creative arts, trades and services.  They deliver a platform for inspired local creators, makers and innovators like you, to reach new audiences and attract buyers.

What is Inspired by Surf Coast?
Inspired by Surf Coast is a website www.inspiredbysurfcoast.com.au which includes an interactive map that lists all sorts of businesses in the Surf Coast Shire. One of these categories is ‘Inspired Creatives’ In addition to the map, the stories of local business owners and their businesses are shared. Each story highlights what it is about the Surf Coast that inspires them or their business. The campaign also promotes the stories and website content on social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

Is there a deadline?
No.
Anything else I need to do?
To help get your story out, there’s also the option to share the story of what inspires you, and why you love being based on the Surf Coast. The Wadawurrung People and the Guilidjan and Gadubanud Peoples of the Eastern Maar are the traditional custodians of the land we now call Surf Coast Shire. We acknowledge their custodianship, and all other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People who are part of our Surf Coast Shire community. We value the special spiritual and material relationship that they have with the land and water, including the trees, rocks, hills, valleys, creeks, rivers and ocean of the Surf Coast and hinterland. We are committed to reconciliation.
