The festive season is a wonderful time to come together with family and friends - but it can also be a time when things get a little out of hand.

From excessive food waste to overspending, unnecessary packaging and the temptation of endless sales, the impact on both our wallets and the environment can quickly add up.

The Surf Coast Shire Council is encouraging households to embrace a greener Christmas by keeping celebrations simple, thoughtful and low-waste.

“Often it’s the simple things - nice food, good company and thoughtful choices - that make the season feel special,” Cr Phoebe Crockett said. “More presents and more stuff doesn’t necessarily mean a better Christmas.”

“Small choices can make a big difference. It’s all about buying local, avoiding excess, getting crafty, supporting creatives, choosing reusables, trying new options, and recycling where you can - all while having fun!”

“You can start by avoiding items that often end up as waste, like single-use gift wrapping. Old newspapers make an excellent option for gift wrap. Also opt for experiences, useful gifts, second-hand or locally made, quality products where you can,” she said.

Top tips for a greener festive season

Buy local: Support local makers, growers and retailers while reducing transport emissions. Local experiences leave lasting memories and make great gifts.

Choose reusable over disposable: From cloth serviettes to gift bags and advent calendars.

Get crafty: Make your own decorations using greenery from the garden, wrap gifts in fabric or reuse old wrapping paper.

Plan your meals: Write a shopping list and buy only what you need to cut down on food waste.

Recycle and compost right: Check what can go in your recycling, glass and FOGO bins and explain your bins to any house guests.

To help you keep it green this festive season, Council has compiled ten practical, easy ideas to reduce unnecessary waste. They cover everything from smart shopping and low-waste gifting to creative DIY options and better recycling habits.
