An exciting new splash park design for the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre being built in Torquay has been revealed.

The indoor splash park will feature two slides, various water fountains and jets, and accessible play zones designed for young children of all abilities.

The splash park’s tile and equipment colours were chosen in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Inspiration has been drawn from the beautiful coastal features of Wadawurrung Country.

The colours represent the shades of the water, and tones of the beaches, cliff faces and vegetation, in a design aiming to make the park inviting and exciting for all.

Other centre features

The splash park is a key feature of stage 2, currently underway, which also includes a dedicated learn-to-swim pool, spa, sauna, steam room and additional change rooms.  Stage 2 is fully funded by the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

These works are in addition to the 25-metre and warm water pools, gym, café and allied health suites as part of Stage 1, supported by the Victorian and Australian Governments and Surf Coast Shire Council.

Stage 1 and 2 works are being completed concurrently with the centre planned to open in the early months of 2027.

Wurdi Baierr (pronounced word-ee by-eer) means ‘big gathering place’ in Wadawurrung Language and the centre will soon be living up to its name, attracting locals and visitors wishing to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

What it means for locals

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney MP, joined Surf Coast Shire Mayor Libby Stapleton on site to inspect progress on the new centre.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said:

“This is a fantastic milestone for Torquay and the wider Surf Coast - and for families right across our growing region. Wurdi Baierr will be one of the best aquatic and recreation centres in regional Victoria.”

“For families in Armstrong Creek, Mount Duneed and surrounding areas, this incredible facility will be just a short 15-minute drive - making it easier to stay active, spend time together and enjoy a great local space designed for everyone.”

Surf Coast Shire Mayor Libby Stapleton said:

“The splash park is going to be a big drawcard for the centre. Parents of young children are particularly excited, knowing their kids will be able to enjoy water play no matter the weather outside.”

“Together with the three pools, gym, spa, sauna, steam room and other facilities, there will be something for everyone.  Construction is powering ahead – and I can’t wait to see people streaming in early next year.”

“We’re extremely grateful for the funding we’ve received to make this all possible.”
