Reducing textile waste

pile-fast-fashion-merchandise.jpg

Did you know Australia's per capita textile consumption is the highest in the world?

We buy around 27kg (approx. 56 new items each year) per person, and throw out around 23kg each year.

Textile waste is a national priority, and Seamless, Australia's clothing stewardship scheme is working to create a sustainable circular clothing industry by 2030. A garment levy (proposed at 4 cents) will be used to create programs to incentivise clothing design that is more durable and recyclable, and expand clothing collection, sorting and recycling.

What can we do to reduce textile waste?

  • Avoid - use what you already have
  • Reduce - buy less, choose quality and launder carefully
  • Reuse - repair, swap, rent, sell, donate
  • Recycle - look for local recycling or take back programs
  • Dispose correctly - if unwearable, dispose in your landfill bin (red lid)

Remember NEVER put textiles in your recycling bin (yellow lid).
