Continuing the Pilk Purriyn truth-telling journey on 26 January
Published on 01 January 2026
Wadawurrung Traditional Owners invite the Surf Coast Shire community and visitors to join them in a profound experience of deep listening at the Pilk Purriyn (sunrise) event in Torquay on 26 January, 2026.
Now in its fourth year, this special gathering offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with Country and Culture.
Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) will continue to lead the event upholding Cultural responsibilities and protocols, and look forward to collaborating on the event proceedings with the broader First Nations community living on Wadawurrung Country.
The 2026 event will include Welcome to Country, Smoking and dance ceremonies, as well as singing by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and The Howell Sisters.
Truth-telling is at the heart of this event, which helps deepen awareness of the enduring grief, loss, and harm caused by colonisation. The event will start at 5.30am before the new day dawns on Warri Dja (Sea Country) at Cosy Corner in Torquay.
From the first event in 2023, crowds have been drawn to the truth telling, connection, and quiet contemplation of Pilk Purriyn. January 26, 2025, saw thousands of allies and the First Nations community gather at Cosy Corner for a tangible expression of their support for reconciliation and a shared future, together.
The evolution of Pilk Purriyn has cemented its role in the collective hearts of the Surf Coast community. People of all ages and backgrounds are invited to come together in quiet, compassionate reflection.
About Pilk Purriyn
Pilk Purriyn means “sunrise” in the Language of Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners and First People of the land where this event takes place, at Cosy Corner Beach, Torquay.
This event is held at sunrise to symbolise the dawning of a new era of understanding and healing between all people in the community.
Pilk Purriyn is a unique opportunity for people to gather, reflect, acknowledge the history of our nation, and to deeply listen.
Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation is again presenting Pilk Purriyn with the support of Surf Coast Shire Council and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority.
Organisers are encouraging people to register for the free 2026 event via surfcoast.vic.gov.au/PilkPurriyn to help gauge numbers and enable sharing of updates.
Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and WTOAC Co-Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Eccles:
“January 26 is a difficult day for many in our Mob - but Pilk Purriyn is changing that. Each year, more people join us on Warri Dja (Coastal Country) at sunrise to listen, reflect, and walk together toward healing. This gathering counters what January 26 has long represented and creates space for real healing and reconciliation. Seeing the community embrace this new way of recognising the day gives us hope for the future.
"Deep appreciation to Surf Coast Shire Council and Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority for supporting us since this event was first held in 2023 – Nyatne (thank you)."
Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor Libby Stapleton:
“Pilk Purriyn has become such a profound and meaningful event for our community.
“Council is proud to respectfully support Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the wider First Nations Community in their truth-telling, which helps deepen understanding of the immeasurable hurt and loss felt by First Nations people on 26 January. The event aligns so well with Council’s statement of commitment to reconciliation and the work we have been doing for many years.
“Deep listening and understanding are at the heart of reconciliation journeys, and we encourage people from across our region to again witness and absorb Pilk Purriyn with open hearts.”
Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Chief Executive Officer Christine Ferguson
"Pilk Purriyn has established itself as an important annual event that has real meaning for the community, and we are proud to be involved. I would encourage people to get down and take part to see first hand the power of deep listening."
