Surf Coast Shire Council invites people to take the lead and contribute to the next Domestic Animal Management Plan.

The plan will outline how Council and the community can play their role in making the Surf Coast a place where people and pets can enjoy shared spaces and live together safely.

With more than 5,100 registered dogs and more than 1,000 registered cats across the shire, Surf Coast residents love their pets.

“I know through the bond with Whistler, my White Swiss Shepherd, just how special pets are and that they’re part of the family, offering so many health and wellbeing benefits,” Cr Adrian Schonfelder said.

“Local laws relating to domestic animals are in place to ensure the community is safe for people and pets. The Domestic Animal Management Plan helps us work towards this, which is why we’d love to hear your feedback on how we can manage dogs and cats and encourage responsible pet ownership.

“Whether you’re a pet owner or not, whether you’re a local or someone from outside the shire who loves bringing their dog here – all input will be valuable.”

Complete the survey before 14 August

Feedback will help shape a draft plan, to be considered by Council.

How pet owners can take the lead

Through the development of the Domestic Animal Management Plan, Council is calling on both locals and visitors to take the lead and be responsible pet owners.

From registering your pet and picking up dog poo when you’re out and about, to keeping a close watch on your furry friend and sticking to our 24-7 cat curfew – it all helps.

“The Rangers team is dealing with similar issues the community told us about in the current Domestic Animal Management Plan,” Cr Schonfelder said. “Now is an ideal opportunity to offer a friendly reminder about how pet owners can play their part to make the Surf Coast an even better place to live and visit.

“It’s worth mentioning that we acknowledge there are many pet owners who always do the right thing, and we thank them for that.”
