Anglesea Bike Park’s volunteer body has dissolved its Surf Coast Shire Council Community Asset Committee status in favour of adopting a less-formal management model.

The volunteer group will become Friends of Anglesea Bike Park, with the support of Council and the Surf Coast Mountain Bike Group.

Council endorsed the move at its December meeting, acknowledging that the ‘friends of’ model fitted the group’s operations better, with less governance and management time demanded of its volunteers.

The acclaimed bike park occupies land Council leases from Alcoa, and boasts downhill and jumps tracks, a cross-country loop and trials section.

Cr Joel Grist said Council would continue to support management and maintenance of the park under a memorandum of understanding with the friends group.

“Anglesea Bike Park is an outstanding community asset, much loved by riders of all ages from Anglesea and far beyond,” Cr Grist said.

“Maintaining such a highly-rated facility demands a lot of work, and we commend volunteers for their dedication and commitment across many years.

“This transition in title and operations model recognises those demands, while ensuring that the community-led group will continue to advise Council on management of the park.”

Council supported the move as it formally noted a 2024-2025 annual update on the operations of its community asset committees.
