Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are road closures needed?

Each year, a limited number of major events in the Surf Coast require changed traffic conditions so they can take place safely for everyone.

Road closures require the approval of multiple agencies including Council, Regional Roads Victoria (Department of Transport and Planning) and Victoria Police.

We're committed to minimising the impact on residents and local businesses, by working with event organisers to provide as much notification as possible. This helps ensure impacted people are well-informed and aware of any changed traffic conditions prior to the event.

We play a support role to event organisers with the following notification activities:

  • Letters to residents along the event route.
  • Advance notification signage placed along the event route.
  • Electronic VMS signage placed along the event route.
  • Advertisements in local papers.
  • Community information sessions.
  • Updating Council's websites.

Will public transport services be impacted?

There will be changes to public transport services. Customers are advised to check the Public Transport Victoria website for updates.

I live on the Great Ocean Road and have an appointment in Geelong on Thursday 16 October. What are my options?

If you aren't able to change your appointment, you're encouraged to leave early for Geelong to avoid the road closures. Depart at approximately 8.30am from Lorne, to be clear of the road closure at the Eastern View Memorial Arch.

If this is not possible, police escorts will occur twice in each direction. You should be ready to join slightly ahead of these times:

- From Lorne to Eastern View at approx. 11.15am* and 1.35pm*

- From Eastern View to Lorne at approx. 11.35am* and 1.55pm*

* times subject to change

I have a specific question or concern about the road closures. Who should I contact?

Please first check the official event website as it has comprehensive information, and your question might be answered there.
