Safety upgrades will continue on Fischer Street, Torquay, with Stage 2 works starting on 23 February 2026.

The upcoming Stage 2 works, aimed at creating safer streets for all users, include:

  • Merrijig Drive and Fischer Street roundabout – new raised pedestrian crossings on Merrijig Drive legs of the roundabout.
  • New raised pedestrian crossing on Fischer Street, near Yirn Avenue.
  • Speed hump on Merrijig Drive between Yallock Circuit and Scott Avenue changed to a raised pedestrian crossing.
  • New cycling lane on Fischer Street between Centreside Drive and Merrijig Drive, west side.

Surf Coast Shire Councillor Liz Pattison said these upgrades form part of Council’s ongoing commitment to upgrading this important connection between central and north Torquay.

“The changes aim to improve safety for everyone using Fischer Street, whether they’re riding to school, walking to the shops, or driving to work,” she said.

“Fischer Street was identified as a high-risk corridor for pedestrians and cyclists during the development of Council’s Safer Cycling Strategy in 2023.”

During construction there will be road closures at the intersection of Fischer Street and Merrijig Drive, with local access only on Merrijig Drive between Scott Avenue and Beachley Lane and Fischer Street between Centreside Drive and Yirn Avenue.

All roads will be open for Easter and school holidays.

“We appreciate the community’s patience during construction and encourage everyone to follow signage and detour routes while works are underway,” said Cr Pattison.

Stage 3 works will start after Easter and include:

  • Centreside Drive roundabout – new raised pedestrian crossings on all four legs.
  • Speed hump on Merrijig Drive near McLean Street changed to a raised pedestrian crossing.
  • New cycling lane on Fischer Street between Centreside Drive and Merrijig Drive, east side.

Further information about traffic impacts for Stage 3 works will be communicated once traffic plans are approved.

Final line marking works as part of Stage 1 will take place at the Fischer Street and Darian Road roundabout, along with line marking for the new bike path between Parkside Crescent and Highlander Street.

These works will be carried out from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February. During the works there will be reduced speed limits, detours and short periods of limited access to driveways and footpaths.

Works will be conducted between 9am and 3pm, with all roads reopening and traffic conditions returning to normal outside these hours.

These works continue efforts to improve safety on Fischer Street, following the installation of raised pedestrian crossings at the Inshore Drive intersection, wombat crossings at Nautical Rise and Deep Creek and ‘sharrows’ (shared lane markings for cyclists and cars) at several roundabouts in 2024.

The road safety improvements were selected through a Transport Accident Commission funded analysis in 2023, which included a community survey and workshops.

This project is funded by Victorian Government grants via the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program and Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.
