The start of the Surf Coast Classic races for women and men will be relocated to Torquay, rather than Lorne, due to bushfire activity and hot weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

Starts to the Surf Coast Classic races will now be held earlier. Wednesday’s 136.5km women’s race will start at 10.30am. Thursday’s 174.4km men’s race will start at 10am.

Foremost for organisers in the decision was the safety of riders, staff, volunteers and spectators. Organisers will continue to work closely with authorities to monitor local conditions and at this point, no changes have been made to any events on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

The revised courses retain a superb platform for classical one-day racing, with fans and spectators encouraged to come and watch the best international teams and riders from around the world striving to start their season on a high.

Quote from Scott Sunderland, Race Director

“The safety of our riders, teams, staff, volunteers and spectators is always our absolute priority. With the evolving bushfire situation in the region, relocating the start to Torquay and activating our contingency course is the most responsible and proactive decision.

"I would like to thank the CFA, Police, local authorities and our event partners for their close cooperation and timely advice in making this decision. These changes allow us to continue delivering high-quality racing while managing the conditions in a safe and controlled way.”

Quote from Surf Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Libby Stapleton

“The safety of our community and the cyclists, crews and officials is our highest priority. Thanks to the CFA and other authorities for providing race organisers with advice to ensure the event can go ahead safely on an alternative course starting and finishing in Torquay.

“We encourage people to watch the race along The Esplanade in Torquay. The home straight near Fishermans Beach will be buzzing.”
