Never bin batteries or flares
When unwanted batteries or marine flares are tossed in your landfill or recycling bins they can start a fire in the collection truck, at the recycling sorting facility or at the landfill.
Batteries that end up in Anglesea landfill not only create a fire risk, they can leak dangerous chemicals into our underground waterways.

Follow these suggestions to store your batteries safely at home before taking them to a drop off:
- Cover the ends of used batteries with duct tape or clear sticky tape, to prevent sparking and reduce the risk of fire.
- Store them in a glass container and make sure the container is not airtight.
- Don't keep them in metal containers or with other metal objects.
- Store them in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
- Keep them away from children and pets.

Marine flares
Flares must be used within the serviceable life of three years, with expiry dates stamped on the side of each flare. Keep flares away from fuel or combustibles and store them in a dry place.
Unwanted flares can be taken to select police stations, but you must call the station prior to transporting flares:
