Lithium-ion batteries: power tools & e-scooters

Lithium-ion batteries from larger items must be taken to the Anglesea, Lorne or Winchelsea transfer stations for free drop-off.

This includes rechargeable lithium-ion batteries from:

  • power tools e.g. drills, saws, sanders
  • garden tools e.g. hedge trimmers
  • laptops
  • jump-start battery packs
  • cordless lawnmowers
  • e-scooters
  • e-bikes
  • defibrillators
  • electric skateboards
  • vacuums

Car, boat & truck batteries

Lead-acid batteries from cars, boats and trucks are accepted free of charge at the Anglesea, Lorne and Winchelsea transfer stations.

Alkaline, lithium & lithium-ion - what's the difference?

Alkaline batteries are traditional single-use, non-rechargeable batteries, commonly available in AA, AAA, C & D sizes. They do not contain lithium and generate power using zinc and manganese.

Lithium batteries (also known as lithium primary batteries) are single-use, non-rechargeable batteries that contain metallic lithium. They are commonly used in watches, cameras, key fobs and some remote controls.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most common rechargeable batteries used in everyday devices such as mobile phones, lap tops, power tools and e-bikes.
Lithium-ion batteries work by moving lithium ions between electrodes rather than using solid metallic lithium. They can be highly flammable if damaged, incorrectly manufactured, stored or disposed of, and can catch fire, explode or release toxic gases.
