Maxx sings praises for all ages gig in Torquay

Torquay performer Zoms & Co has been tuning up for a spot on the Amplify stage for several years – and now it’s time to make their debut.
Amplify is a music and arts program, headlined on the Surf Coast by a series of all ages gigs. The next leg is at The MAC Torquay on Saturday 29 August. There is no cost to attend.
Zoms & Co singer Maxx is excited to feature on the bill along with five other local young acts: Gone Bananas, Gem, Idiots in Power, Goodbye Despair, and Ash of Cedar.
Organised by local young people with the support of Surf Coast Shire Council’s Youth team, the Amplify gigs are helping teenagers like Maxx tick off goals.
“Ever since I was little, I’ve always listened to music. I pretty much wear my headphones 24-7,” Maxx laughed.
“I started doing vocals and trying out instruments, then I started performing a lot at school.
“Amplify is going to be my first community event, which I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve got some pre-show nerves but I’m hoping it’ll help me become more confident in my singing and help me to perform in front of bigger crowds.”
The Surf Coast Secondary College student was grateful for Surf Coast Youth services, highlighting the Amplify program, environmental workshops, and school holiday programs.
“Sometimes it feels like there isn’t much to do in Torquay but this gig is something that’s available to youth that’s fun and doesn’t cost any money.
“My advice to anyone thinking about coming is to show up – either by yourself or with friends – and don’t think of it as a concert but more as a get-together with music playing, where you can meet new people.”
Surf Coast Shire Councillor Joel Grist said the gig was a great Saturday night activity.
“Local youth who are wanting a night out can come along, listen to some music and hopefully make new friends,” he said.
“For local parents of teens, it’s helpful to know it’ll be both fun and safe.”
Doors open 6pm, with performances from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The event will close at 9pm. It is alcohol, smoke, vape, and drug free. There will be security, and no pass outs.
The MAC is located at 77 Beach Road, Torquay.
Amplify is a Victorian Government initiative.
