Safer local streets and roads program
The Safer Local Streets and Roads program is funded by Department of Transport and Planning, in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission, to support development and delivery of road safety infrastructure on local roads.
Funding is allocated for collaboratively developed projects which meet the program requirements.
The program targets:
- Low speed and mixed-use roads and streets
- Intersections
- High speed local roads
Evidence based Safe System Treatments are supported through this program such as:
- Wombat crossings
- Local area traffic management
- Roundabouts
- Speed limit reductions
- Road Safety Barriers’
Surf Coast Shire Council adopted a new road safety strategy in November 2022. In line with state targets, the strategy is working towards a 30% reduction in serious injury crashes and a 50% reduction in fatal crashes by 2030.
In 2024 Surf Coast Shire Council were allocated funding through this program to deliver evidence based road safety treatments on local roads aligning with these targets.
The five projects are:
- School Road, Bellbrae - road safety works
- Connewarre - speed review
- Anglesea - four raised pedestrian crossings (wombat crossings) on Noble Street, River Reserve Road, Cameron Road and Murray Street.
- Fischer Street - safer cycling works
- Merrijig Drive and Quay Boulevard - roundabout
All projects are underway to be delivered by the end of the year.
