Painkalac Estuary

Based on the increasing flood risk to nearby properties, we have requested the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) conduct an artificial opening of the estuary on Tuesday morning (21 October).

As of late Monday, water levels in the creek are 1.961m and there is significant rainfall forecast during the week, including possible thunderstorms.

Significant wind impacts on Wednesday are also a contributing factor to the timing of the artificial opening, for safety.

Artificially opening the estuary is now a necessary step to protect nearby homes, businesses and infrastructure.

GORPACA are asking anyone in the area to please stay safe by keeping their distance while equipment and teams are carrying out the opening.
