29 October 2026: Stormwater Diversion Project update
Contractors will be on site at Torquay’s Esplanade wetlands from Thursday 5 November starting work on the Karaaf Stormwater Diversion Project.
First steps will include the establishment of a site compound and work site areas prior to commencement on laying of the mains pipe along The Esplanade from Sands Boulevard to the Horseshoe Bend Rd intersection.
Installation of an underground pump near the Esplanade Wetlands will proceed next year.
Both lanes of The Esplanade will remain open during the installation works but users should take care with increased heavy vehicle activity, particularly in the Esplanade Wetlands area.
All work will be completed during business hours from Monday to Friday.
The diversion system will help restore natural ebb and flow in the Karaaf Wetlands, diverting about 25 per cent of stormwater flows from residential areas away from the wetlands and into an existing drainage network which outfalls at Deep Creek.
Installation marks a significant milestone in Council’s sustained work in restoring the health of the wetlands in partnership with Community Reference Group members and other key stakeholders.
The system has been designed to ensure that water levels in the adjoining Sands lakes system can be maintained.
Work is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2027 and is being funded by the Australian Government with $1.9 million through the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.
