Did you know?

The nature strip in front of your house is actually public land. It forms part of the road reserve and is owned and managed by Council, but residents help care for it by mowing and keeping it tidy.

Nature strips play an important role in our neighborhood. They:

  • Provide a shared public space that contributes to the character and sense of community in our streets.
  • Need to remain accessible for everyone.
  • Support a healthy environment for people, plants and animals.
  • Help manage climate impacts, including reducing fire risk to the community and infrastructure.
  • House essential underground services, like water, gas and power.

Street Trees

Planting and maintaining street trees is the responsibility of Council. This is to ensure the right trees are planted in the right places. The wrong species can create safety risks, impact the streetscape, or damage underground services.

Have a tree that needs some pruning or want a tree planted or removed, contact us on 5261 0600 or lodge an online request at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/request

What you can do on a nature strip

Grass is the preferred treatment, as it’s easier to maintain, plus it is easier for access to the essential service housed in your nature strip, like

Some mulch is allowed around trees, but not over the whole area.

Low level planting live shrubs and edible plants are allowed.

Nature strips need to be safe and accessible for everyone, humans and animals alike.

Council’s Nature Strip Guidelines and Policy clearly explains what can and can’t be done on nature strips, while keeping our street safe, accessible and attractive for everyone.
