"A Journey of Memory: Image Fragmentation Through Time" cogitates and materially explores what happens to the image of a place after direct observation passes into memory.
Re-examining artworks developed from time in Nitmiluk and Kakadu National Parks, Dr Elaine d'Esterre explores place, creative processes, time and memory as co-creative evolving collaborators.
Fragmentation is both the exhibition’s visual language and its conceptual method. Each passage - from place and earlier artwork, artwork to memory, memory to fragment, and fragment to new creative expression - alters the image.
Spanning oil painting, mixed-media collage and digitally reworked drawings, the exhibition explores the distance between place as it is encountered, remembered and imagi ned anew. These works reveal that fragmentation need not diminish an image — it can release new creative possibilities.
