Open-coast Salt-wedge estuary recognition and protections

The Painkalac estuary, including Mellors Swamp, supports a dynamic and diverse mix of native plants, animals and micro-organisms where the freshwaters of the creek meets the saline waters of the ocean. These areas are known as Salt-wedge communities and they have now been protected by listing under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. To some people they might just look like a “swamp” but they are very important for local biodiversity and to maintaining healthy waterways.
