Surf Coast Shire has a four-bin kerbside collection system:

Green-lidded FOGO bin

Bin-FOGO.gif All food scraps and leftovers go in this bin along with your garden waste.

This is called a FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) collection.

Your FOGO bin is collected weekly in urban areas, and fortnightly in rural areas.

The two biggest benefits of a FOGO collection are:

  • Food and other organic materials will be turned into a resource – compost – that will be used by farmers.
  • Composting creates much less methane (a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide) than if we dispose of FOGO in landfill.

Yellow-lidded Recycling bin

The recycling bin collects many recyclable household materials, keeping them from landfill.Bin-Recycling.gif

This bin is collected every fortnight.

It accepts the following recyclable material:

  • Rigid plastics numbered 1,2 or 5
  • Metal
  • Paper
  • Cardboard

It does NOT accept certain items:

  • NO glass bottles and jars - these are collected in a separate kerbside bin.
  • NO plastic bags or soft plastic packaging
  • NO small lids (smaller than a credit card)
  • NO coffee cups or lids

Purple-lidded Glass-only bin

Bin-Glass.gifGlass bottles and jars (without lids) go in this bin which is collected every four weeks.

The type of glass accepted includes:

  • Jars that held food
  • Drink bottles
  • Beauty product jars
  • Medicine/vitamin bottles

Please remove lids and place in the landfill bin.

Red-lidded Landfill bin

Bin-Landfill.gif This is the bin for other general household waste that isn't accepted in the other three bins.

This bin is collected every fortnight.

Our audits showed that when your waste is sorted properly (food and other organics in the FOGO bin, and recyclables in their correct bins), a fortnightly collection adequate for most households.
