Buckley Biodiverse Carbon Offset Planting

Buckley-frost.jpg

Information updated 8 April 2024

Council is revegetating cleared former farmland as a biodiverse carbon offset planting, aiming to capture and store carbon to demonstrate direct climate change action. This project will improve habitat opportunities in the Buckley area, where more than 98% of the vegetation has been cleared.

Timeframe and progress

Planting started in 2022 and will continue until the 11 hectares is fully planted.

  • In 2022 1,000 seedlings were planted
  • In 2023 4,000 seedlings were planted

Dates for plantings in 2024 will be announced soon. If you would like to assist with planting contact us.

What's being planted?

Seedlings grown from seeds collected from remnant vegetation along nearby road reserves are being planted.

The species planted so far include:

  • Lightwood (Acacia implexa)
  • Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii)
  • Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon)
  • Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha)
  • Varnish Wattle (Acacia verniciflua)
  • Black Sheoak (Allocasuarina littoralis)
  • Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata)
  • Sweet Bursaria (Bursaria spinosa)
  • Sticky Hop Bush (Dodonaea viscosa)
  • Swamp Gum (Eucalyptus ovata)
  • Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis)
  • Hop Goodenia (Goodenia ovata)
  • Bushy Needlewood (Hakea decurrens)

How will the planting improve habitat?

The selected plants flower at different times, grow to different heights and have different characteristics such as prickly branches and hollows in later life.

These different features offer habitat for many species, particularly birds, in amongst largely cleared farmland.

Who is helping with the planting?

Surf Coast Shire staff are working with:

  • Torquay Landcare Group
  • Rotary
  • Friends of Lake Modewarre
  • Moriac Primary School
  • Bellbrae Primary School
  • Surf Coast Secondary College

How much carbon will be captured and stored here?

Modelling estimates that in 25 years' time the cumulative carbon stored will be around 900 tonnes.
