Can I recycle that?
There are many items that CANNOT go in your kerbside recycling bin. Read on for a list of other recycling options (many are FREE) where you can take these harder to recycle items.

Where can I recycle things that can't go in my kerbside recycling bin?
Agriculture Drums / Bags
- Ag drums - can be recycled for FREE at Winchelsea transfer station via the drumMUSTER program
- Ag bags - soon we will offer a recycling service at Winchelsea transfer station for woven polypropylene bags (e.g. bags used for feedstock, fertiliser etc.). Check back for more details soon.
Appliances / Batteries / E-waste

Appliances and e-waste - can be dropped off to our Transfer Stations for FREE or Officeworks Geelong. Find more information on disposing e-waste here.

Batteries - must NOT be put in your kerbside bins (they are a fire hazard). Batteries can be taken to our Transfer Stations, Surf Coast Shire civic office, most supermarkets, as well as some hardware stores like FAGs Mitre 10 and Bunnings. Check here to see your closest B-cycle drop-off.
Bedding / Linen
- Pre-loved quilt covers, sheets and towels (any brand) - recycle at Sheridan Torquay
- Mattresses and bed bases - can be taken to Council transfer stations (Anglesea, Lorne, Winchelsea). See here for prices.
Bikes
- Bikes can be donated or dropped off for FREE at the Anglesea Transfer Station Resale Centre. Find more information here.
Blister Packs
- Blister packs can be recycled at Priceline Torquay or Aireys Inlet Pharmacy via the Pharmacycle program. Other Pharmacycle locations can be found here.
Books / CDs / DVDs
- Soft cover books - Check with local charities or op shops to see if they accept books. If not, soft cover books (without plastic or with minimal binding) can be put in the recycling bin (yellow lid).
- Hardcover books – Check with local charities or op shops. Hardcover books cannot be recycled so if they can't be donated, please dispose of in the landfill bin (bright red lid).
- CDs and DVDs – Check with local charities or vintage markets, e.g. Garage Torquay
Coffee Pods
- Nespresso coffee pods/capsules - can be collected and recycled through Nespresso at Torquay Community House or via mail-back option. Find out more here.
Furniture & Outdoor Goods
- Furniture in good condition, tools, outdoor goods - may be donated at the Anglesea Resale Shed. Please call ahead to check your item can be accepted.
Gas Bottles / Fire Extinguishers
These can be dropped off for FREE at our Transfer Stations - note the limits below:
- Fire extinguishers - only red bottles accepted. Limit of 3 per visit.
- Gas bottles - up to 9kgs. LPG only - no butane, CO2, or nitrous oxide.
Paint
- Paint - drop off FREE at Anglesea Transfer Station. See full details on what can be accepted here.
Personal Products / Beauty
Polysytrene
- Polystyrene packaging - can be dropped off for FREE at Anglesea Transfer Station (up to 0.5m3).
Shoes
- Sports shoes with some life left - donate to The Running Company (Torquay & Geelong) where they'll passed on to communities in Alice Springs.
- Worn out sports shoes - recycle old sports shoes (max 5 pairs per person) at Platypus Shoes Torquay, any Rebel Sport or look for other drop points within the Tread Lightly Program.
- Worn out work boots - taken to Totally Workwear (Geelong)
Soft Plastic
- Soft plastic - recycle for FREE at our Anglesea Transfer Station. Find out more here.
Sporting Goods
- Good quality sporting goods - contact Sport For All (Gilbert St, Torquay) to see if your items can be donated.
Toys
- Toys in good condition - may be suitable to donate to your local toy library. For the Surf Coast Toy Library please email at: surfcoasttoylibrary@gmail.com with photos / details to confirm if your item can be donated.
- Preloved toys - can be taken to the BIG W Toys for Joy program with collection bins available in every BIG W store. *Please note BIG W cannot accept: books, board games, wooden toys, play dough, paint and slime, pens, pencils, crayons or paint brushes, oversized toys such as bikes, scooters, skateboards, or sports toys such as soccer goals. Visit their website to check what can be accepted.
White goods
- White goods (e.g. fridges, washing machines, hot water systems, etc.) - can be dropped off for FREE at Anglesea, Winchelsea, Lorne Transfer Stations. (Domestic quantities only - max 20 items).

Items that CANNOT go in your kerbside bins, but CAN be dropped off for FREE at Transfer Stations
You can drop off these items for FREE at our Transfer Stations:
- Batteries* including AA, AAA, C, D, 6volt, 9volt, and button batteries
- Car and boat batteries*
- E-waste (electrical and electronic waste that has a plug, battery or cord)*
- Fire extinguishers - only red bottles accepted. Limit of three per visit.
- Gas bottles up to 9kgs. LPG only - no butane, CO2, or nitrous oxide. Limit of three per visit. Bottles should be as empty as possible.
- Mobile phones (or take to a Mobile Muster drop off point)
- Scrap metal items including whitegoods (e.g. fridges, microwaves, barbecues)*
- Large plastic containers, toys, etc. (Anglesea transfer station only)
- Light globes and tubes*
- Large cardboard boxes/packaging e.g. from new furniture or appliances, up to 0.5m3
- Paint* (only at Anglesea transfer station via the Paintback recycling program)
- Polystyrene packaging e.g. from new appliances (Anglesea and Lorne transfer stations only), up to 0.5m3
- Waste motor oil (domestic quantities only - limit of 20 litres per transaction)*

Please note: Chemical, CO2 & Butane cylinders, poisons are NOT accepted in kerbside bins or at Transfer Stations. These are only able to be collected through the Detox Your Home program.
