Bin Amnesty for extra unpaid kerbside bins

Does your household have extra Council wheelie bins that you no longer need or are not paying for?

Council is holding a bin amnesty to collect extra unpaid kerbside bins to help reduce costs.

Each household pays an annual waste charge through their rates for four kerbside bins:

  • lime-green lid - FOGO
  • yellow-lid - recycling
  • purple lid - glass only
  • red lid - landfill.

Extra or larger bins

Households can pay for extra bins or upgrade to a larger bin size. These bins stay at the property if it is sold, and new owners may not realise they are paying for them.

This amnesty gives households an opportunity to check their bin services and return any unwanted or unpaid Council bins.

What happens next?

Households that pay for extra or larger bins have received a letter outlining the bins at their property that they are paying for. At the same time, Council staff have been putting stickers on these bins to easily identify approved extra bins.

In coming months:

  • bins without the correct sticker will not be emptied
  • unpaid extra Council bins will be removed from properties.

All Council-issued bins have a Surf Coast Shire logo stamped into the bin and remain Council property. Bins without the logo will not be emptied.

My bin is damaged and needs repairs or replacement

Council owns your kerbside bins, but it’s your job to keep them clean and in good condition.

Check your bins occasionally and contact us if they have cracks in the body, broken lids, missing pins or wobbly wheels – we’ll repair or replace them for free.

And remember, if you sell or move house, leave the bins and the kitchen benchtop caddy behind for the next person to use.

Apply for an extra bin

The standard kerbside service includes one of each type of bin:

  • FOGO (lime green lid)
  • recycling (yellow lid)
  • glass-only (purple lid)
  • landfill (red lid)

If necessary you can get an additional bin of any type for an annual fee.

If you move to another residence within Surf Coast Shire, you must notify Council so we can update your records. Call us on 5261 0600 or at info@surfcoast.vic.gov.au

It is your responsibility to notify Council when you no longer require the extra bin.

Exchange my bin for a larger bin

The standard kerbside service includes:

  • 240-litre FOGO bin (lime green lid)
  • 240-litre recycling bin (yellow lid)
  • 140-litre glass-only bin (purple lid)
  • 140-litre landfill bin (red lid)

If these bin sizes do not meet your household’s requirements, you can apply for a larger bin for a fee (once-off fee for the recycling and glass bins, and annual fees for the landfill bin). FOGO bin upgrades are not available due to operational and safety issues.

Existing bins replaced with larger bins must be completely EMPTY before they can be swapped.

If you move to another residence within Surf Coast Shire, you must notify Council so we can update your records. Call us on 5261 0600 or at info@surfcoast.vic.gov.au
