Four Bins, One Goal: how we're reducing waste

We’ve asked you to make some big changes to how you sort your waste and recycling. So how are we doing?

Watch this short video to see our progress over the last 12 years: the wins, the challenges, and where we can do better:

What can we do better?

We audit the four bins each year to see where we need to improve. This year's audits showed lower contamination (wrong items in the bin), which is great!

Click on the bin type to see what we found in our FOGO, recycling and glass bins:

Disappointingly, half of what's in our red-lid landfill bins should have gone into either the FOGO, glass or recycling bins instead.  Food makes up a whopping 37% of the landfill bin and green waste like lawn clippings, branches and prunings adds another 4%.

It's time to get it sorted right!

Putting food and green waste in landfill takes up valuable space at the Anglesea landfill, which is almost full.  When the landfill closes, our rubbish will have to be transported further resulting in higher costs to ratepayers.

Food and green waste in landfill also releases potent greenhouse gases.

All food and green waste - even the smallest amount - belongs in your FOGO bin (lime-green lid) where it can be turned into a nutrient rich compost that grows our food.

Where does our waste really go?

Want to know what happens to the contents of your bins once the truck collects them? Watch these short behind-the-scenes videos so you can see your FOGO, recycling and glass transformed into something new, and why the landfill bin should be your last choice.
