First-Time Parent Groups go online

Surf Coast Shire Council has introduced online First-Time Parent Groups to ensure new parents can continue to access the support they need during the pandemic.
First-time parents can now connect with each other and Council’s Maternal and Child Health facilitator staff via video chat app Zoom and messaging app WhatsApp.
Torquay Ward Councillor David Bell said he was glad these invaluable groups could continue to operate despite social distancing restrictions.
“Becoming a parent can be quite daunting for many people and sometimes it can be an isolating experience,” he said.
By transitioning these groups to online applications, we can make sure new parents don’t miss out on this important council service.
Cr Bell said the first online session was held last week with nine out of ten parents taking part and others now asking to join.
“These groups have been running for many years now and people always tell us how important they are. They provide much-needed help and guidance to new parents by connecting them with others going through the same experience. So many long-term friendships are formed though them.”
Council’s Maternal and Child Health staff contact new parents directly to organise the First-Time Parent Groups.
